What Is TAMIS?

Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) is a procedure in the realm of colorectal surgery, which allows for the precise and meticulous removal of polyps, early-stage tumours, and certain types of cancers located within the rectum. TAMIS merges the benefits of highly specialised laparoscopic techniques with direct transanal access, ensuring a less invasive approach with enhanced patient comfort and quicker recovery times.

Reasons for Doing TAMIS

TAMIS is typically recommended for:

Removal of Rectal Polyps

Polyps that are too large or too difficult to remove during a routine colonoscopy can be removed through TAMIS.

Treatment of Early-Stage Rectal Cancers

For some patients with early-stage rectal cancer, TAMIS provides an effective, minimally invasive treatment option.

Rectal Lesions

Certain types of rectal lesions, particularly those that haven’t penetrated deeply into the rectal wall, can be effectively treated with TAMIS.

Am I Eligible For TAMIS?

Eligibility for TAMIS is generally determined by the nature and stage of the rectal disease. Patients with early-stage rectal cancer, large polyps, or rectal lesions that have not infiltrated the entire rectal wall are typically suitable candidates. However, patients with more advanced cancers or those with health conditions that could complicate surgery might not be eligible for this procedure.

TAMIS Procedure

The TAMIS procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon inserts a specially designed proctoscope into the rectum. Using the enhanced visualisation and access provided by the TAMIS technique, precise surgical instruments are introduced through the proctoscope to excise the polyp or tumour. Once the procedure is complete, the excised tissue is removed through the anus.

Risks & Complications

As with any surgical procedure, TAMIS carries potential risks and complications, including infection, bleeding, anal incontinence, and a small risk of damage to surrounding organs. However, due to its minimally invasive nature and the high level of control offered to surgeons, these risks are generally considered to be low compared to traditional surgery.

Recovery & Aftercare Guide

Recovery from TAMIS is typically faster than with traditional surgery, with many patients able to return home the same day. A mild sore throat or rectal discomfort is common but usually resolves within a few days. Normal activities can often be resumed within a week. Follow the specific aftercare advice provided by your healthcare team, which may include dietary modifications and follow-up appointments.
