Ptosis Surgery In Singapore | (A Guide For Patients)

Ptosis Surgery is a medical procedure that’s performed to correct droopy eyelids. It is a condition that may affect people of all ages.

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops, causing incomplete eye opening. It can occur due to a variety of reasons, including aging, injury, or a congenital defect. Ptosis can affect one or both eyelids and can cause functional issues such as obstructed vision or eye strain. The affected eye appears smaller than the other eye, and there may be a noticeable asymmetry in the eyes.

There are two main types of Ptosis: congenital and acquired. Congenital Ptosis is present at birth and is caused by a defect in the muscle that lifts the eyelid. Acquired Ptosis, on the other hand, develops later in life and can be caused by a variety of factors such as age-related muscle weakness, injury, or neurological disorders.

Types of Ptosis Surgery

Ptosis surgery is often performed as an ambulatory (day) surgery case and under local anesthesia with light intravenous sedation. There are several types of Ptosis Surgery that are available, each with its own benefits and risks. Some of the most common types of Ptosis Surgery include:

Minimally invasive ptosis correction

This technique is appropriate for minor degrees of ptosis. This may be performed using small stab incisions in the upper eyelid and passing a suture to tighten the levator muscle that is involved in eye opening.

Levator Muscle Tightening

This technique is appropriate for all degrees of ptosis and involves making an incision at the level of the double eyelid crease. The levator muscle is tightened by stitching or is trimmed and shortened then repaired to the eyelid cartilage. This incision technique also permits the surgeon to remove excess droopy skin and/or create a double eyelid crease at the same surgery, if desired. Advantages of the open incision technique include ptosis correction that has good long-term correction, and the ability to perform other eyelid modifications during the same op.

Benefits and Risks of Ptosis Surgery

Ptosis surgery brings significant benefit to those who suffer from droopy eyelids. This procedure lifts the eyelids to their appropriate position, which can help to clear the obstruction and enhance vision. It also improves the eye appearance and makes one appear more alert and attractive.

Additionally, ptosis surgery can improve the appearance of the eyes, making them look more alert and youthful. This can increase self-confidence and improve overall quality of life.

Risks associated with ptosis surgery include bleeding, wound infection, postoperative asymmetry and loss of correction.
