Rhinoplasty | What To Expect Before & After

Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job”, that involves altering the shape of the nose for both cosmetic and functional purposes. Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery in Singapore, and many people undergo the procedure to improve their appearance or address functional issues. Rhinoplasty can provide numerous benefits, including improving the appearance of the nose, enhancing facial symmetry, and correcting functional issues such as difficulty breathing through the nose..

Before Rhinoplasty

Initial Consultation

During your consultation with the surgeon, you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. The surgeon will also evaluate your medical history and physical health to determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Pre-operative Assessment

Preoperative assessment is important in identifying the issues to be addressed. This includes relevant medical history, such as nasal allergies and obstruction, previous injuries and previous surgeries. Central to the preoperative assessment is understanding the goals of the patient and to see how they may be best achieved.

During Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is often performed as an ambulatory (day) surgery procedure without the need for hospital admission.

Anaesthesia Options

There are two main anaesthesia options for rhinoplasty surgery: general anaesthesia and moderate sedation. The choice between general anesthesia and moderate sedation depends on the complexity of the procedure. In either case, the patient is asleep, relaxed and does not feel pain associated with the procedure.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty techniques are divided into closed and open incisions. In closed rhinoplasty, small incisions are made in the inside of the nose to permit access to the nasal skeleton so that appropriate maneuvers may be performed to modify its position and shape. This is usually appropriate for minor changes in the nasal form. Open rhinoplasty involves making an incision on the columella of the nose as well as within the nostrils and gives the surgeon clear visualization of the underlying anatomy. It permits accurate modifications to the nasal contour and is appropriate for more extensive nasal work. Often, the nasal bones and/or cartilage may be removed or reshaped using various different techniques. Cartilage may sometimes be taken from the ear or the rib to augment or strengthen the nasal skeleton. Occasionally, implants may also be used to help achieve the desired shape.

The potential risks associated with rhinoplasty include bleeding, wound infection and nasal obstruction. In rare cases, there may be change in the shape of the nasal cartilages over time. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon, the risks are generally low.

After The Surgery

Recovery Process

After surgery, the immediate recovery process can involve some discomfort and swelling.

It is common to experience nasal obstruction, swelling and minor bleeding following a rhinoplasty procedure. Pain is often manageable with minor analgesics. The wound heals in about a week and stitches are removed at that time, if necessary.

Post-operative Instructions

After undergoing rhinoplasty, your surgeon will provide specific instructions for caring for your nose during this time, which may include avoiding blowing your nose, or participating in strenuous activities.

Avoid smoking during the recovery process, as this can interfere with the healing process.

Patients are encouraged to spend as much time as possible in the upright position following rhinoplasty to reduce swelling. Smoking is prohibited as this has an adverse impact on wound healing and may lead to increased incidence of complications. Strenuous exercise is to be avoided for 2 weeks post-rhinoplasty.

Long-term Care

Follow-up appointments with your surgeon are important to monitor your healing progress and ensure that you’re satisfied with the results. Communicate your concerns with your surgeon to determine if any additional procedures or adjustments are needed.

Long-term follow ups are important for assessment of the nasal form and function, and to ensure that these are aligned with the patient’s and surgeon’s goals. Scar management helps to minimize the scar visibility; it is an important aspect of post-surgical management and adds a fine touch to the final result.
