What Is Greenlight Laser Therapy?

Greenlight laser therapy primarily treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common prostate gland condition in men. This therapy employs a green-wavelength laser to vaporise prostate tissue that is causing urinary obstruction.

Applications of Greenlight Laser Therapy

While primarily used for BPH, greenlight laser therapy is also used to treat:

  • Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), due to prostate enlargement not responding to medication.
  • Bladder neck contractures, which involve the narrowing of the bladder outlet that sometimes occur after prostate surgery.
  • Certain types of prostate cancer, where precise removal of tissue can be beneficial.

Benefits of Greenlight Laser Therapy

Greenlight laser therapy offers several advantages over traditional surgical treatments for prostate issues, which include:

Reduced Bleeding

The laser seals blood vessels as it vaporizes tissue, significantly lowering the risk of bleeding.

Improved Urinary Symptoms

Most patients report a significant improvement in urinary flow and reduction in symptoms of BPH soon after the procedure.

Quick Recovery

Patients undergoing Greenlight Laser Therapy often experience a significantly shorter recovery period. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days, and the overall downtime is minimal.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Greenlight laser therapy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can go home the same day. Here’s what to expect during the procedure:

Patients may be asked to stop certain medications and to fast for a few hours before the procedure. Antibiotics might be prescribed to prevent infection.

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia, although local anaesthesia with sedation may also be an option.

  • The surgeon introduces a cystoscope through the urethra to reach the prostate.
  • A fiber optic cable carrying the laser is passed through the cystoscope.
  • Laser energy is delivered to vaporize the excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow.
  • The procedure typically lasts about one hour, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.

After the procedure, patients are monitored for a few hours before being discharged.

Potential Risks and Complications

While Greenlight laser therapy is generally safe and effective, it carries potential risks and complications.

Temporary Urinary Symptoms

Some patients may experience burning sensations, frequent urination, or an urgent need to urinate shortly after the procedure.

Urinary Tract Infections

The procedure can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, leading to infections.

Retrograde Ejaculation

This is a common side effect where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting through the penis during ejaculation. This condition is usually harmless but can affect fertility.

    Greenlight Laser Therapy

    Frequently Asked
    Questions

How effective is Greenlight laser therapy in treating BPH?

Studies show that Greenlight laser therapy is highly effective in improving urinary flow and reducing symptoms of BPH, with many patients experiencing long-lasting relief.

How is the Greenlight laser specifically tailored to target prostate tissue during therapy?

The Greenlight laser emits a 532 nm wavelength light that is selectively absorbed by the haemoglobin in blood, allowing precise vaporization of prostate tissue while sparing surrounding structures.

Can Greenlight laser therapy be used in patients who are on blood thinners?

Yes, one of the key advantages of Greenlight laser therapy is its ability to coagulate blood vessels during tissue vaporization, making it a safer option for patients on anticoagulant therapy compared to traditional surgical methods.
