The Prostate Health Index (PHI) is a blood test that helps assess the risk of prostate cancer. It combines three prostate-specific measurements:

  • Total PSA (tPSA): Total PSA measures the overall level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. PSA is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous prostate cells, and elevated levels can indicate prostate abnormalities, including cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostatitis.
  • Free PSA (fPSA): Free PSA refers to the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood that is not bound to proteins. The ratio of free PSA to total PSA can help differentiate between prostate cancer and benign conditions. Typically, a lower ratio of free PSA to total PSA suggests a higher risk of prostate cancer.
  • [-2]proPSA (p2PSA): [-2]proPSA is a specific isoform of PSA that is more closely associated with prostate cancer. Higher levels of [-2]proPSA in the blood are linked to a greater likelihood of prostate cancer, making it a crucial component of the PHI test.

The PHI score is calculated using these three measurements through a proprietary formula: ([-2]proPSA / fPSA) x √tPSA. This calculation results in a single score that provides a more accurate risk assessment for prostate cancer than any of the individual measurements alone.
