Our first story follows a woman’s courage and life-saving decision in the face of a rare condition.
Cristina was initially suspected of having ovarian cancer back in her home country, Philippines. After enduring a 6-hour operation, she was informed that her condition was something rare and is beyond their expertise. She then decided to come to Singapore for treatment in October 2018 where she sought the services of medical experts from our FeM Surgery team. She then underwent another 16-hour major surgical operation.
How was your experience with our FeM Surgery team?
The medical care and attention I received from a team of medical professionals is unparalleled. Being able to find the experts in the field has kept me positive throughout my journey. The dialogues I had with the whole medical team, on what to expect before, during and after that invasive, complicated and risky medical procedure, were so detailed and precise, that nothing came out as a surprise throughout the entire process until my full recovery. The best part of all this, all doctors and nurses took care of me like they are my family, it feels like I never left home.
What have your learned on your journey?
I’ve learned to live life with more passion and to take better care of it this time around. I’ve learned to treasure every moment and become more grateful of simple blessings. I’m slowly learning to worry less and let go of the things that are beyond my control. I’ve learned to listen to my body and finally understood that health is wealth. I’ve learned that my family and friends’ love and concern for me is beyond measure, they are the ones who kept me going. Family First has always been my mantra and I intend to keep it that way.

What would you like to say to someone else who might be going through a difficult time?
Given the rarity of peritoneal malignancy cases, we must seek help from experts who specialized on this rare type of disease. The cause of our medical condition is unknown, but treatment options are available, all we need are the services of medical experts trained to perform the complicated and risky medical procedures. When you believe and are confident of the team who will provide you the proper medical care you need, there is not much to worry about.
