  • Fasting: Depending on the specific liver function test your doctor orders, fasting typically involves abstaining from food and drinks, except water, for 8-12 hours.
  • Medication Adjustments: Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking. Certain substances can impact the results of liver function tests. Your doctor may advise you to temporarily discontinue certain medications before the test. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
  • Avoiding Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. Alcohol can affect liver enzyme levels and may lead to inaccurate results.

What to Expect During the Test

A liver function test is a quick and easy procedure that usually takes a few minutes to complete. You can expect the following during the test:

The doctor will begin by cleaning the area where the blood will be drawn, usually the inside of your elbow or the back of your hand, with an antiseptic wipe. This step helps prevent infection.

A tight-band tourniquet will be placed around your upper arm to make the veins more visible and easier to access. This may feel slightly uncomfortable, but it is required for a successful blood draw.

Albumin

  • Normal Range: 3.5-5.0 grams per deciliter (g/dL)
  • Low Levels: Low albumin levels may indicate chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or other conditions affecting protein production. Since albumin helps maintain blood volume and fluid balance, low levels may lead to oedema.

Total Protein

  • Normal Range: 6.3-7.9 grams per deciliter (g/dL)
  • Abnormal Levels: Total protein levels include albumin and globulin. Abnormal levels may suggest liver or kidney disease, infections, or other conditions affecting protein synthesis and metabolism.

Abnormal Results

Abnormal liver function test results may require further evaluation. Elevated enzyme levels or abnormal protein measurements can indicate liver disease, but they are not definitive.
