Anatomy of the Spine
The vertebral column, commonly referred to as the spine, is a complex structure made up of 33 vertebrae. These vertebrae are categorised into five regions:
- Cervical (neck)
- Thoracic (mid-back)
- Lumbar (lower back)
- Sacral
- Coccygeal (tailbone)
Each vertebra is separated by an intervertebral disc, which functions as a cushion to absorb shock and facilitate spinal movement.
Intervertebral discs are composed of a soft, gel-like centre known as the nucleus pulposus, encased by a tougher, fibrous outer layer called the annulus fibrosus. These discs play a pivotal role in maintaining spinal flexibility, thereby enabling a range of movements such as bending and twisting.
Facet joints are small joints between the vertebrae that allow for spinal movement, and they often become the focus in fusion surgeries aimed at restricting this movement. Pedicles are bony protrusions from the vertebrae that serve as anchor points for surgical hardware during fusion procedures.
