Preparing for the Procedure
- Medical Evaluation: Patients undergo assessment of their medical history, current medications, and pain condition before any procedure. This evaluation includes a review of previous imaging studies, such as MRI or CT scans, to identify anatomical landmarks and confirm the suspected pain source. Blood tests may be ordered to check for bleeding disorders or infections that may affect procedure safety.
- Medication Adjustments: Some medications may need to be temporarily discontinued before nerve interventions. Blood thinners such as warfarin, aspirin, and certain anti-inflammatory medications often require adjustment or temporary cessation. Patients taking diabetes medications may need modified dosing on the procedure day, especially if fasting is required.
- Fasting Guidelines: Patients typically need to avoid food and drink for a specified period before the procedure. Solid foods are usually restricted for 6-8 hours pre-procedure, while clear liquids might be permitted up to 2-4 hours before. These restrictions help prevent complications related to sedation.
