What is a Breast Biopsy?

A breast biopsy is a diagnostic procedure to detect and assess breast abnormalities. This minimally invasive technique involves removing a small sample of breast tissue for further examination under a microscope.

By accurately identifying the presence of cancerous or benign cells, a breast biopsy aids in early detection and treatment planning, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Types of Breast Biopsy

An open biopsy is a more invasive procedure that removes a small piece of tissue from the breast for testing. It is usually done under general anaesthesia.

Duration of procedure
1 - 2 hours
Recovery time
Few days - few weeks

Fine needle aspiration biopsy involves inserting a thin needle into the breast and removing a small sample of cells for testing. It is a quick and relatively painless procedure that can be done in a doctor’s office.

Duration of procedure
5 - 10 minutes
Recovery time
No downtime

A core needle biopsy uses a larger needle to remove a small tissue core from the breast. It is usually done under local anaesthesia.

Duration of procedure
30 - 60 minutes
Recovery time
No downtime

Vacuum-Assisted biopsy is similar to a core needle biopsy but uses a vacuum to remove a larger tissue sample under local anaesthesia.

Duration of procedure
1 - 2 hours
Recovery time
No downtime

An image-guided biopsy uses imaging techniques such as ultrasound, mammography or MRI to guide the biopsy needle to the precise location of the abnormality.

Duration of procedure
30 - 60 minutes
Recovery time
No downtime

Who Is Eligible for Breast Biopsy?

Eligibility factors for breast biopsy:

  • Presence of a breast lump or abnormality
  • Abnormalities found in breast imaging tests, such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI
  • Bloody nipple discharge
  • Changes in the breast skin, such as dimpling, puckering, or redness
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Family history of breast cancer or other genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer

Preparing for Breast Biopsy

Before a breast biopsy, some preparations must be made to ensure the procedure is safe and effective. Here are some tips on how to prepare for a breast biopsy:

  • Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking or any health conditions you may have that could affect the biopsy
  • Avoid blood thinning medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen for a few days before the biopsy
  • Discuss any allergies you may have with your doctor to avoid any potential allergic reactions during the procedure
  • Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing on the day of the biopsy to ensure ease of movement during the procedure
  • Arrange for someone to accompany you to and from the biopsy in case you feel dizzy or lightheaded after the procedure
  • Avoid using any lotions, creams or deodorants on the breast on the day of the biopsy, as it may interfere with the results

Choosing a Breast Biopsy Specialist

If you require a breast biopsy, it is crucial to choose a specialist who is experienced and qualified to perform the procedure. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a breast biopsy specialist:

Credentials

Look for a specialist certified by a reputable medical board with a proven track record of success performing breast biopsies.

Experience

Choose a specialist with extensive experience performing breast biopsies, particularly the type of biopsy you require.

Communication and bedside manner

Opt for an approachable specialist who can communicate clearly, answer your questions and explain the procedure in detail.

Patient reviews

Look for patient reviews and ratings of the specialist online to get a sense of their reputation and patient satisfaction.
