Vasectomy Singapore

Vasectomy, often referred to as male sterilisation, is a permanent form of birth control for men. The procedure involves a minor surgery that disrupts the vas deferens, preventing sperm from being released into the ejaculate, thereby eliminating the possibility of fertilisation and subsequent pregnancies.

What is Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that serves as a permanent form of male contraception. It involves the sealing, cutting, or blocking of the vas deferens, the tubes responsible for carrying sperm from the testicles.

Consequently, sperm cannot combine with semen during ejaculation, effectively eliminating the chance of fertilisation and subsequent conception.

Types of Vasectomy

Vasectomy procedures can be classified into two main types, each with a unique approach to sealing the vas deferens. Both methods are widely practised and offer high success rates:

Involves small incisions made on the scrotum to access the vas deferens, which are cut, tied, or cauterised.

A less invasive technique using a small puncture instead of incisions, reducing the risk of bleeding and infection.

Who’s Eligible for Vasectomy?

While vasectomy is a popular and effective form of male contraception, it’s essential to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Factors that make someone eligible for vasectomy include:

Age

Generally, adult men above 18 years old.

Family planning

Men who are certain they do not want more children or have reached their desired family size.

Medical condition

Absence of health issues that may increase the risk of complications during the procedure, such as blood clotting disorders, allergy to anaesthesia, or severe scrotal or testicular abnormalities.

Risks and Complications

While vasectomy is generally considered a safe procedure, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications involved. Some of the most common risks associated with vasectomy include the following:

  • Bleeding at the surgical site
  • Infection
  • Temporary pain, swelling or discomfort
  • Sperm granuloma (A small, pea-sized lump formed by leaking sperm at the site of the vasectomy)
  • Chronic pain in the scrotum
  • Recanalisation (In rare cases, the vas deferens may spontaneously reconnect, restoring fertility)

    Vasectomy In Singapore

    Frequently Asked
    Questions

How long does a vasectomy procedure typically take?

A vasectomy usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the type of procedure and the surgeon’s experience.

    Is the vasectomy procedure painful?

During the vasectomy, a local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area, minimising pain. Some discomfort may be experienced after the procedure, but it is generally mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Is a vasectomy 100% effective in preventing pregnancies?

Vasectomy is one of the most effective birth control methods, with a failure rate of less than 1%. However, it is not immediately effective, and alternative contraception should be used until a semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm.
